Kinder students were especially engaged this Monday morning during their Dynamic Dino workshop. They first made paper bag puppets, learning the difference between herbivore and carnivore dinos, identifying them based on how their eyes are placed and then played the role of paleontologists searching for dino bones in their classroom to build a dino skeleton. A big THANK-YOU to Robyn and Carley from Let's Talk Science!! We look very forward to working with them again in the new year.

Hilson's Annual Food Drive for the Parkdale Food Centre
Thank-you to all the families who have already donated. The drive has been extended and both Kinder classes will be collecting donations until the end of this week. Non-perishable foods and toiletries are much appreciated.
Bus Evacuation Safety Drill
Both classes will be having a bus evacuation safety drill this Thursday, Dec.1st. The purpose of this drill is to prepare students in case of an emergency on a school bus. This is pertinent infomation for all our busing Kinder students and also applicable to non-busing students for whenever they may take a bus for a field trip. The following video gives parents an idea of the what the drill entails. The video is 11 minutes in length.

Inclement Weather Procedures
In case of heavy snow fall or freezing rain, it is always good to keep informed as to school transportation.
The decision to cancel student transportation rests with the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) and is announced via several communication channels. You may check the OSTA website at http://www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/ for updates. OSTA also shares transportation cancellation information
early in the morning via their twitter feed and local news outlets.
Please check these resources if you are wondering about buses. We do our best to keep Hilson's phone line free during these times in case of emergency calls.
Schools remain open when transportation is cancelled. If you drive your child to school, you must also arrange to pick your child up at the end of the day at 2:30 pm sharp.
If your regular dismissal plans are different from the every day, it is very important that you communicate plans for dismissal with your child. If you plan to pick up your child or if someone else is picking them up, please give that information to your child and write a note in their communication book.
On inclement weather days, please pick your child up from the Kinder hall outside of your child's classroom.
Hilson's Pledge - Anti-Bullying Week
Hilson students all took a pledge last week as part of the OCDSB's anti-bullying week. The key message that is being focused on by Kinder students is "Treat others like you would like to be treated". Teachers will be using stories during circle time to help students understand the importance of being kind and inclusive with each other as well as what are the characteristics of a good friend.
