Reminder - Friday, April 27th - PD Day - No School

Farewell to Ms. Edna and Ms. Laura

Both classes said good-bye to Ms. Edna and Ms. Laura on Friday. It was a pleasure to have them in our classrooms and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Field Trip - Iona Park - Tuesday, April 24th
Both classes will be going on their 1st Field Trip this Tuesday.  They will be walking from the school to Iona Park for a nature scavenger hunt. Please be sure your child is comfortably dressed for the weather (walking shoes, sunhat, spring jacket). We will be leaving the school at 10:30am and returning by 12:30pm. Please be sure to pack a water bottle for your child that day and some extra snacks in their lunch bag as all the outdoor play is bound to make them hungry.
All parent volunteers are to sign in at the office at 10:25am. Thanks for joining us on our adventure!

With spring come the hungry bears!
It isn't uncommon for children to go through a growth spurt at this time of year.  Please chat with your child about the amount of food in their lunch bag. Many of our year 2 (SK) students have been stating they are still hungry during our designated lunch period (12:50-1:10pm) when they open their lunch bag to find only 1 item left to eat. Students have open snack during both morning and midday play blocks and then have their designated lunch time, making for 3 opportunities to sit down and eat. Packing an extra healthy snack goes a long way in keeping the hungry bear away.

A call for Playdough
Both classes have run out of playdough. If you would like to make a batch for your child's classroom, please send a message via Remind or your child's Communication book. We can then send you a recipe if need be and a date to send it in. Thanks!

Glue sticks - They eat them! No seriously...the Kinder set goes through them VERY quickly. Any donations are greatly appreciated!

Parent Climate Survey
Every two years, the OCDSB asks parents to provide input and feedback to help us develop strategies to promote safe and inclusive schools. This week, you will find a Parent Climate Survey letter with a school specific web address in your child's Note Tote.  The survey will be open from April 23 to May 11.  For those looking to read more about this initiative click here: https://www.ocdsb.ca/cms/One.aspx?portalId=55478&pageId=204463

Cake Walk
Hilson's grade 6 students are hosting a Cake Walk on Tuesday, April 10th.  The Cake Walk is to raise funds to help reduce the cost of the grade 6 end of year trip.
A Cake Walk is different from a bake sale. Baked goods are on display (cakes, groups of cookies/cupcakes) and students place their tickets in a container in front of the baked good they hope to win. It is like a raffle. At the end of the day, winners are drawn and the baked goods are collected to go home with winning students.
LAST DAY TO BUY TICKETS is Monday, April 9th. Tickets are 25 cents each or 5 for a $1.00.  The Kinder team will then send the tickets home for parents/guardians to write: Student name, Homeroom (Kinder A or Kinder B) and phone number on each ticket. Families then cut out the tickets &  send  them back to school on Tuesday, April 10th for the Cake Walk.

Bug Hotel

Both Kinder classes are creating a bug hotel. The bug hotel will reside outside in Hilson's outdoor classroom. Parents can learn more about bug hotels here: https://gardentherapy.ca/build-a-bug-hotel/
Families can also help by sending in the following materials:
-  Pinecones
- Dried bamboo branches
- Twigs/branches
-  Dried flowers (like sunflowers)
-  Hay or woodchip (like what you might put in a hamster cage)
-  Small terracotta pots or pieces of broken terra cotta

April Showers Bring May Flowers
April is looking to be cooler than any of us would like. We continue to play outside for two 45 minute blocks. Our first play block is generally from 10am-11am and our second from 2-2:30pm. Please dress your child for the weather that day. Our cubbie space is very crowded and can not house extra outerwear therefore please do not send in boots or raincoats for just in case weather. Also be sure to label all your child's outdoor clothes as there are many similar styles and they often get mixed up.

April, May & June - that's only 3 months left!!
The school year tends to speed up at this time of year. April is a busy, busy, busy month in schools as it is when teachers and administrators get together to begin school organization for the following school year. If your plans for the 2018-2019 school year have changed, please contact the office to inform admin.
For any parents who have yet to register their child at Hilson for either Kindergarten or our MFI programs (gr.4 specifically), please do so sooner than later. It greatly helps in our planning for September.
Watch this space as there will be more events and important dates added to our calendar (field trips, Education Week events, volunteer appreciation tea, end of year festivities).

 Welcome to...
Ms. Laura and Ms. Edna! Both will be joining the Kinder team for the next 4 weeks. They are student Early Childhood Educators who are completing part of their practicum studies at Hilson. Ms. Laura will be working with the Kinder A class and Ms. Edna will be working with the Kinder B class.

Outdoor Play and Extra Clothes
Spring Ottawa weather can range from sunshine to rain to flurries all in a couple of weeks, sometimes in the same day. Please be sure to dress your Kinder for the weather, even as it fluctuates. This may mean snowsuits one day, spring jackets the next, followed by splash pants and rain boots. Please continue to send you child in with mittens/gloves as well as a hat as we have run out of extras at this time. Thanks to all parents who have sent in an extra pair of clothes for their child. If you have yet to do so, please send some in this week. They come in especially handy at this time of year when children like to wade in muddy puddles and play in wet snow/sand.

Water Bottles
A friendly reminder to pack a reusable water bottle for your child. There are a number of students who have not had theirs with them this week. Please remember to pack it for them.

The Kinder team would appreciate...
More glue sticks (both classes have run out of the supply collected at the beginning of the school year), card stock and stickers.
We thank-you for all the toilet paper rolls and newspaper. We have now collected enough for both classes.

Welcome Back! The Kinder team is eager to welcome back all our Kinder students on Monday, March 19th. As always, with any return from a long break, your Kinder may have some feelings. They may be excited the first couple of days and then not so keen on that early start after that. Be sure to give yourselves some wiggle room in the mornings in an effort to smooth over the transition. Feel free to give your educators a heads up if your Kinder is having a slow or rough start to the day.

Extra Clothes & Indoor Shoes
Extra clothes and indoor shoes were sent home over the break to check for sizing. Please be sure to send indoor shoes to school on Monday as well as a ziplock bag with: a couple of pairs of socks, underwear, pants/leggings and a shirt. Extra clothes are not just for toileting accidents but for lunch/snack time spills, overzealous water table play and outdoor puddle/wet snow play. They help keep students comfortable at school and are much appreciated by staff and students when needed.

Blues in the Schools - Monday - Thursday, 11:45am-12:45pm

Students will have the pleasure of seeing 4 musical performances this week. Performances will be in the gym from 11:45am-12:45pm Monday-Thursday.
Performances are as follows:
Monday - Sharon Riley & Jeff Rogers
Tuesday- JW Jones & Laura Greenburg
Wednesday - Adrian Sutherland & Chris Zimmerman
Thursday - Todd Snelgrove & Doug Gouthro

Toonie Tuesday - Feb.27th - this Tuesday
Toonie Tuesday is an OCDSB fundraiser to collect money for the Education Foundation. The Education Foundation helps families and students in need by providing funding for breakfast programs, school snacks, field trips and boots/snowsuits. Please send a toonie in (or more) with your child on Tuesday to support this initiative.

Pink Shirt Day - This Wed. Feb.28th
All students are encouraged to wear pink on Wednesday, Feb.28th to mark Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day is an anti-bullying awareness day that originated in Nova Scotia in 2007 when 2 high school students witnessed a boy being ridiculed for wearing a pink shirt. In a show of support, the 2 boys went out and bought a bunch of pink shirts to hand out to fellow students and to show the bullies that there is strength in numbers.
This is a meaningful message for Kinder students who often associate pink with gender. Help us bust this stereotype and communicate that pink is nothing but a colour that can be worn/used by anyone. Don't have a pink shirt - no worries! Students can wear anything pink - scarves, hats, pants, ties/bowties.

Another Mild Weather Week
As the temperatures begin to get milder, the Kinder yard starts to get wet, wet, wet. Keeping your Kinder out of the puddles and wet snow is impossible. They love it! Please pack extra socks and gloves/mitts. Splash pants are also a good idea as snow pants also get soaked through.

Upcoming Events, Important Dates & Reminders
Every Monday is Library day, please pack those books
Every Monday is also Note Tote day, please send Note Totes to school
Every Tuesday is Pizza Day
Every Friday is Lunch Lady day - Please note Lunch Lady no longer gives cutlery with your child's meal. Please keep a spoon in your child's lunch bag.

Lice, Pink Eye, Yo-Yo Fevers, Gastros + the 175th day of January....
You name it Hilson's Kinder classes have gotten it. Add that to many back to back extremely cold, grey weather days and it feels like a never ending winter....
Please keep your child at home if they are not well, giving them that extra 24 hours to be 100% sure they are ready to go back to school. We understand the work constraints and that some of our Kinders are super eager to return to school but it really does help in keeping the germs from spreading. Thanks for your help in this matter!

Water bottles
Many children are coming to school without their water bottles. Keep in mind that without their own water bottles, they are using communal water fountains that are shared by all 360 students at the school. More germs (see where we're going with this :0) Please be sure to pack a water bottle in your child's backpack. Thanks!

Pizza & Lunch Lady woes

Please be sure to clarify with your child if they are indeed receiving Pizza on Tuesday & Lunch Lady on Friday. The struggle is REAL! There are tears.... If you order occasionally and are choosing to skip a week or if you ordered as a one time treat, have a chat with your Kinder about it. They tend to work on precedent so even if it was just that one time they got pizza/Lunch Lady, they seem to think (hope) it will happen again.

Mitts & Socks
Not a bad idea to have an extra pair of mitts or socks in your child's backpack at this time of year. When we can go out, their mitts and socks are sometimes too wet from morning play to use comfortably for afternoon play.

Valentine's Day letter went home last week - let us know if you didn't receive it.
Both classes are celebrating Valentine's Day. Participation is voluntary and up to you and your child. A letter went home to families last week with names of the students in each class. You can address each card individually or you can simply leave the To: blank & have your child sign the From: part of the card. The students have created their own mailboxes and will be playing post officer when delivering their cards. Leaving the To:blank helps our younger, year 1 students to deliver them easily with no fuss. Addressing the cards to each student gives an attainable reading challenge for our year 2 students as they will need to read their handwriting and deliver it to the appropriate mailbox of the friend they addressed the card to.

The Kinder team is collecting....
Plastic odds & ends - think marker lids, bottle caps, caps to food pouches, broken toys, etc. Keep the paper towel, egg cartons, toilet paper rolls, milk/bread tags, dryer lint, bird seed, old cards coming. All crafting supplies are also always welcome. Hair dye squeeze bottles or any reusable spray bottles are appreciated as well.
