Vermicomposter, Environmental Stewardship, Eggshells & Shredded Paper
Both the Kinder Acorns & the Kinder Beehive have been hard at work weeding the school garden. In addition, they have been working worm tea and compost into the soil. Worm tea is the liquid that the Kinder team has been collecting from the vermicomposter. It is also a sign that the vermicomposter is too wet. If any of our Kinder families have a paper shredder at home, we would gladly take the paper shreddings off your hands. We are also looking to collect eggshells for the worms. The eggshells must be rinsed and dried please. The eggshells will neutralize the PH level in the vermicomposter and save it from becoming too acidic which happens if you feed the worms too many fruit scraps. They also give our red wigglers a calcium boost. The students are learning quite a bit about environmental stewardship through this initiative. Kudos to Mrs. Hallard for taking the lead in this area!
Change of weather - Please label all outer clothes!
Please ensure your child's name is on their outer layer. With cold mornings & warmer afternoons, it is not uncommon for there to be many sweaters/coats stripped off during outdoor play. In our experience, some children really don't recognize their outerwear when piled together with those of their classmates. There are also many children who have similar styles or the same sweater/coat. By labelling your child's clothes, we can remind them what is theirs & ensure it goes home. We recognize that some children have a hard time with the change of season & the change in clothing that comes with it. If your child is fighting that extra layer, please pack it in their backpacks just in case they need it later in the day. Although the commute to school may be short or in a vehicle, both Kinder classes spend anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes outside a day. Please be sure they are dressed to play outside comfortably.
